Española Humane

Saving New Mexico’s Neediest Animals. We’ve touched the lives of more than 152,820 companion animals since opening our doors.

An Urgent Message:
As you can imagine, our current health crisis has impacted New Mexico’s animals almost as much as its people. As a result, the focus of Espanola Humane right now is to ensure that all animals that have been displaced or abandoned find new adoptive or foster homes as quickly as possible. We need your support more than ever! Many of our funding sources–like our annual gala and our retail stores–have been disrupted. So please consider a donation, if possible, and/or becoming an adoptive or foster parent to a sweet creature who needs a loving home!

We are the only animal welfare organization in northern New Mexico to provide free spay/neuter surgeries and vaccines to all of our residents.

We literally go door-to-door offering free pet food, litter, collars, insulating straw, dog houses, and of course, free vaccines and spay/neuter.

We welcome every animal, no matter how sick, neglected or abused, and happily do so free-of-charge before finding them loving, forever homes.

Our facility is donated by the city of Espanola so 90% of every dollar goes directly to animal services.

Our many hearts extend to all the hearts and paws who were loved by Theo Raven. We will forever cherish this film we created with local legend, curator of joy and whimsy, and adopter of beloved Española Humane dogs.

We serve animals in northern New Mexico’s poorest communities. Our dedicated staff of veterinary professionals, animal care specialists, and adoption coordinators work together with an army of volunteers to provide free spay/neuter surgeries, to rescue stray animals, and to reduce neglect and abuse of animals in our community.

  • Free Spay/Neuter – call (505) 753-0228 for an appointment

  • Low-Cost Vaccinations – Available during scheduled Vaccine Clinic dates

  • 152,820+ animals helped – our commitment to saving

For the staff and volunteers at Española Humane, our work isn’t merely a job, but our responsibility as humans. We’ve been able to attract the best and the brightest talent in shelter work today, because of our shared commitment to animal welfare.

Española Humane’s mission is to improve the lives of animals in underserved communities.

Española Humane is a local nonprofit serving animals in some of northern New Mexico’s poorest communities, including Rio Arriba County; the Native American Pueblos of Ohkay Owingeh, Santa Clara and San Ildefonso; and northern Santa Fe County.

Our dedicated staff of veterinary professionals, animal care specialists, and adoption coordinators work together with an army of volunteers to:

• Provide free spay/neuter surgeries to over 5,300 animals every year

• Rescue over 3,000 stray animals annually

• Reduce neglect and abuse of animals in our community

We are the only animal welfare organization in northern New Mexico to provide free spay/neuter surgeries and vaccines to all of our residents.

We identify areas with the highest numbers of strays and literally go door-to-door in those neighborhoods offering free pet food, litter, collars, insulating straw, dog houses and of course, free vaccines and spay/neuter.

We are truly an “open door” shelter —we welcome every animal, no matter how sick, neglected or abused, and happily do so free-of-charge before finding them loving, forever homes.

Because our facility is provided for free by the city of Espanola, 90% of every dollar goes directly to animal services.

We’ve earned the highest 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator .
