Española Humane

Touching the lives of more than 143,000 companion animals since opening its doors.

Pups and kitties can’t choose where they are born; we go where the need is greatest. Help us transform the lives of animals most in need of your love.

We manage a city-owned shelter, which means no mortgage or rent or utilities. 91% of your gift goes directly to animal care. Our focus is quality staff and service, doing the most to love every animal every day. We’re proud to have earned a reputation for providing consistent, humane care and healthy, successful adoptions, along with innovative, effective ‘get-‘er-done’ programs.

For the staff and volunteers at Española Humane, our work isn’t merely a job, but our responsibility as humans. We’ve been able to attract the best and the brightest talent in shelter work today, because of our shared commitment to animal welfare.

Our mission is to improve the lives of animals in underserved communities.

The only real, sustainable and humane way for communities to end the euthanasia of healthy and treatable animals is through spay/neuter. Put simply, too many unwanted animals are born and too few are adopted. Our shelter takes in any animal in need, including the very elderly, ill, aggressive or injured animals who may not be able to be rehomed. By providing humane care for these animals, we help end the cycle of homelessness that creates more litters whose tragic fate is roaming the streets, neglect or worse. And it’s working. Over the last eight years, our community has enjoyed a 42% drop in homeless animals, with 84% of shelter animals finding their forever homes.

Every year we complete 4,500 free spay/neuter surgeries and 12,800 free vaccinations for at-risk pets. We also sponsor vaccine clinics in traditionally underserved neighborhoods. This community outreach effort builds relationships with pet owners, identifies the health of at-risk pets, and schedules surgeries for intact pets, preventing unwanted litters. Our goal is to reduce the number of unwanted animals at our shelter by creating a healthier community for pets, their families and their neighbors.
