Española Humane is offering free adoptions on all adult pets during the Fourth of July weekend in an effort to open kennels and reduce overcrowding conditions. In addition, adoption fees on kittens are reduced to $25.

All pets are altered, vaccinated and come microchipped, along with heartworm testing and free heartworm medication.

The weekend adoption event is dubbed Let Freedom Wag in celebration of the Independence Day holiday.

The shelter, like many nationwide and in the state, is caring for a high number of pets in the kennels and in foster homes. Wildfires have taxed area shelters and Española Humane took in dozens of dogs and cats during the Calf Canyon and Hermit’s Peak wildfires.

The Animal Welfare Coalition of Northeastern New Mexico, which serves Las Vegas, N.M., recently closed after deciding not to renew its contract with the city. The shelter took in the coalition’s remaining cats on this week.

The shelter’s adoptions start at 10:30 a.m. both days; it closes on Saturday at 6 p.m. and on Sunday at 5 p.m. It will be closed on Monday for the holiday.

The shelter is located at 108 Hamm Parkway, Española, NM, 87532. For more information, call 505-753-8662 or visit espanolahumane.org.
