Layla (Paws in the Pen)

Hello! My name is Layla (Paws in the Pen)!

Here’s what my friends at Española Humane say about me:

- Layla is soon to be "paw-roled" from our Paws in the Pen program in partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department! Each dog is paired with two inmate trainers and enrolled in a 24/7 8-week training program that is designed to equip the dog with a nice foundation of training that will help them succeed in their new home. Each of these dogs will go home potty and crate trained with a whole list of cues and basic behaviors; to ensure a successful adoption, we are providing four training sessions to adopters, so you can learn what your dog knows, and an invitation to weekly discounted drop-in classes. These dogs also go home with a biothane leash and collar, 6 months of heartworm prevention, are fully up-to-date on all vaccines and medications, and are spayed and neutered.

Layla is a big, beautiful, energetic puppy. She was returned to the shelter for no fault of her own, but simply because she was growing to big for her adopter. She had reached her suspected full grown weight at four and a half months old! Clearly she still has a ways to go, so be ready for a good size doggo. Layla will be most successful in an active home that will continue her training, and provide all the exercise she needs with running, hiking and playing. This great big pup is still encountering a lot of new and novel things in her world, so she will need support and safe guidance through all her new experiences. She plays with the other dogs in her group and is learning how to dog dog socialize. Layla can't wait to find her forever home.

If you’re interested in adopting me, fill out an application to get a jump start on the process! We don’t offer holds on shelter pets, so c’mon in to meet and greet to decide if you’ve met your match. Applications for pets in foster care, at Ojo Santa Fe, or offsite in other programs will be reviewed by staff before appointments are scheduled.
