November drive helps shelter continue providing free services

All donations to Espanola Humane up to $200,000 in November will be matched dollar for dollar thanks to generous donors to the regional shelter.

The month-long drive will allow the shelter to continue to offer free spay/neuter services and provide care to some of the most vulnerable pets in the state, organizers said.

The drive has raised more than $18,000 since it started Nov. 1. Donations may be made online at www.espanolahumane.org/donate/ or sent to the shelter at Espanola Humane, 108 Hamm Parkway, Espanola, NM 87532.

So far this year, the shelter has provided free services to more than 3,800 dogs and cats, despite having to close temporarily this spring because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, the shelter altered 6,055 dogs and cats for free and tested and vaccinated 16,591 pets.

The shelter, which serves Rio Arriba County and parts of Santa Fe County, took in 3,560 pets and treated 7,880 pets in 2019.

The shelter operates a furniture, art, collectibles and jewelry resale store, the Barkin Attic, at 851 St. Michael’s Drive in Santa Fe.

Espanola Humane has earned the highest rating among nonprofits for its transparency and financial accountability, a four-star rating with Charity Navigator, the fifth year in a row. The shelter is the only animal-welfare organization in New Mexico to achieve the four-star rating and is among only 150 animal-welfare organizations nationally to earn the designation.
