Hello! My name is Poppy (Paws in the Pen)!
Here’s what my friends at Española Humane say about me:
- Poppy is soon to be "paw-roled" from our Paws in the Pen program in partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department! Each dog is paired with inmate trainers and enrolled in an 8-week training program designed to provide a solid foundation of skills to help them succeed in their new home. These dogs graduate potty trained, crate trained, and with a long list of cues and basic behaviors. To help ensure a successful adoption, adopters receive four training sessions to learn what their dog knows, along with an invitation to weekly discounted drop-in classes. Every dog also goes home with a biothane leash and collar, six months of heartworm prevention, is fully up to date on vaccines and medications, and is spayed or neutered.
Poppy is a teenage hound mix, which means she approaches life nose-first.
This girl is curious, adventurous, and always interested in what's happening around her. If there's a scent to follow, a trail to investigate, or something interesting happening in the distance, Poppy is ready to check it out. Like many young hounds, she has plenty of energy, a mind of her own, and a talent for finding creative ways to entertain herself.
Poppy is currently working hard in the Paws in the Pen program, where she's learning how to channel that enthusiasm into positive behaviors. With structure, training, and enrichment, she's building the skills she needs to become a wonderful companion while still keeping all the personality that makes her so much fun.
She would thrive with an active family that appreciates hound dogs and understands that sometimes their nose has an agenda of its own. Whether it's exploring a new trail, playing in the yard, or joining you on daily adventures, Poppy is happiest when she has something to do and someone to do it with.
If you're looking for a dog with personality, humor, and a zest for life, Poppy may be the perfect match.
If you’re interested in adopting me, fill out an application to get a jump start on the process! We don’t offer holds on shelter pets, so c’mon in to meet and greet to decide if you’ve met your match. Applications for pets in foster care, at Ojo Santa Fe, or offsite in other programs will be reviewed by staff before appointments are scheduled.
