Rylie (Paws in the Pen)

Hello! My name is Rylie (Paws in the Pen)!

Here’s what my friends at Española Humane say about me:

- Rylie is soon to be "paw-roled" from our Paws in the Pen program in partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department! Each dog is paired with two inmate trainers and enrolled in a 24/7 8-week training program that is designed to equip the dog with a nice foundation of training that will help them succeed in their new home. Each of these dogs will go home potty and crate trained with a whole list of cues and basic behaviors; to ensure a successful adoption, we are providing four training sessions to adopters, so you can learn what your dog knows, and an invitation to weekly discounted drop-in classes. These dogs also go home with a biothane leash and collar, 6 months of heartworm prevention, are fully up-to-date on all vaccines and medications, and are spayed and neutered.

Rylie is the sweetest little love muffin, with the funniest personality. She came in with her litter of pups, who were old enough to be separated and put into foster. She was significantly under weight and is now looking really healthy, with a beautiful shiny coat. She was selected for the program to help her gain a little confidence to better navigate new experiences. This brave girl is now is doing great, and has a lovely tendency to look to her people for comfort. When she's settled in, Rylie will show you all her goofiness and spunk, and she has the cutest prance when she is feeling good and on a roll. She is getting more comfortable with other dogs, she plays well with the other dogs in the program, and would likely do fine in a household with a cat if introduced properly. Rylie is ready to prance right into your homes and hearts.

If you’re interested in adopting me, fill out an application to get a jump start on the process! We don’t offer holds on shelter pets, so c’mon in to meet and greet to decide if you’ve met your match. Applications for pets in foster care, at Ojo Santa Fe, or offsite in other programs will be reviewed by staff before appointments are scheduled.

More Questions?

  • How much does it cost to adopt a pet?

Puppies and kittens range from $10 to $50. Adults over 6 months are usually free. Adoption fees will be higher for certain breeds and in some locations. For example, Ojo Santa Fe puppies are typically $150.

  • How do my adoption fees help the shelter?

Adoption fees help with medical care, food, and shelter for all animals, not just the youngest or cutest. Most of that expense is paid by our fundraising efforts.

  • How can I prepare my home for adoption?

It depends on your floof’s age and whether they’re a dog or cat. Check out our tips for preparing your home for your new pet. We provide you with a “starter kit” of a collar, pet food and treats.

Also learn about the 3-3-3 rule. It takes a new pet 3 days to calm down, 3 weeks to adapt to your family, and 3 months to bond and build trust. Don’t worry. We’ll have more details and other tips in your adoption package.

  • How do I become a foster parent?

It’s simple. Start by filling out a foster application and our team will contact you. Fostering can be as easy as having a litter of young ones in a spare bathroom before they go to an adoption event. Or, maybe you’d like an adult to spend time with your family, just to see how that pet transforms with a little love and attention. We promise it’ll be rewarding.
