Bonnie (Paws in the Pen)

Hello! My name is Bonnie (Paws in the Pen)!

Here’s what my friends at Española Humane say about me:

- Bonnie is soon to be "paw-roled" from our Paws in the Pen program in partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department! Each dog is paired with inmate trainers and enrolled in an 8-week training program designed to provide a solid foundation of skills to help them succeed in their new home. These dogs graduate potty trained, crate trained, and with a long list of cues and basic behaviors. To help ensure a successful adoption, adopters receive four training sessions to learn what their dog knows, along with an invitation to weekly discounted drop-in classes. Every dog also goes home with a biothane leash and collar, six months of heartworm prevention, is fully up to date on vaccines and medications, and is spayed or neutered.

Some dogs demand attention the moment they walk into a room. Bonnie isn't one of them.

At 4 years old, this gentle girl has spent far too long being overlooked-not because she lacks potential, but because she takes a little longer to show people who she really is. Bonnie is thoughtful, sensitive, and happiest when she's given the time and space to settle in at her own pace.

When Bonnie first arrived, the world felt like a pretty overwhelming place. New sights, sounds, and experiences could leave her feeling unsure. Since joining the Paws in the Pen program, she's been learning that routine, patience, and kindness can help build confidence, and we're already seeing her begin to come out of her shell.

Bonnie isn't looking for someone who needs an instant best friend. She's looking for someone who understands that trust is built one small moment at a time. For the person willing to invest that patience, Bonnie has the potential to become an incredibly loyal and loving companion.

She's proof that sometimes the dogs who take the longest to notice end up leaving the biggest impression.

If you’re interested in adopting me, fill out an application to get a jump start on the process! We don’t offer holds on shelter pets, so c’mon in to meet and greet to decide if you’ve met your match. Applications for pets in foster care, at Ojo Santa Fe, or offsite in other programs will be reviewed by staff before appointments are scheduled.

More Questions?

  • How much does it cost to adopt a pet?

Puppies and kittens range from $10 to $50. Adults over 6 months are usually free. Adoption fees will be higher for certain breeds and in some locations. For example, Ojo Santa Fe puppies are typically $150.

  • How do my adoption fees help the shelter?

Adoption fees help with medical care, food, and shelter for all animals, not just the youngest or cutest. Most of that expense is paid by our fundraising efforts.

  • How can I prepare my home for adoption?

It depends on your floof’s age and whether they’re a dog or cat. Check out our tips for preparing your home for your new pet. We provide you with a “starter kit” of a collar, pet food and treats.

Also learn about the 3-3-3 rule. It takes a new pet 3 days to calm down, 3 weeks to adapt to your family, and 3 months to bond and build trust. Don’t worry. We’ll have more details and other tips in your adoption package.

  • How do I become a foster parent?

It’s simple. Start by filling out a foster application and our team will contact you. Fostering can be as easy as having a litter of young ones in a spare bathroom before they go to an adoption event. Or, maybe you’d like an adult to spend time with your family, just to see how that pet transforms with a little love and attention. We promise it’ll be rewarding.
