Fizz (Paws in the Pen)

Hello! My name is Fizz (Paws in the Pen)!

Here’s what my friends at Española Humane say about me:

- Fizz is soon to be "paw-roled" from our Paws in the Pen program in partnership with the New Mexico Corrections Department! Each dog is paired with inmate trainers and enrolled in an 8-week training program designed to provide a solid foundation of skills to help them succeed in their new home. These dogs graduate potty trained, crate trained, and with a long list of cues and basic behaviors. To help ensure a successful adoption, adopters receive four training sessions to learn what their dog knows, along with an invitation to weekly discounted drop-in classes. Every dog also goes home with a biothane leash and collar, six months of heartworm prevention, is fully up to date on vaccines and medications, and is spayed or neutered.

If energy were a sport, Fizz would be competing at a professional level.

This young pup is equal parts chaos, comedy, and cuddles. He approaches every day with maximum enthusiasm and is convinced that every person, toy, and new experience is the most exciting thing he's ever encountered. Like many puppies, Fizz is still learning important life skills-including that teeth don't belong in every interaction and that not every thought needs to become an action immediately.

Since entering the Paws in the Pen program, Fizz has been working hard on learning manners, leash skills, basic obedience, and appropriate ways to channel all that puppy energy. Beneath the chaos is a smart, affectionate dog who genuinely wants to connect with people and learn how to be the best companion he can be.

Fizz is looking for an active family that understands puppies aren't born polite-they're taught through patience, consistency, and love. In return, he'll provide endless entertainment, plenty of laughs, and a lifetime of adventures.

He may never be the dog quietly sitting in the corner, but for the right family, Fizz will be an unforgettable best friend with a huge personality and an even bigger heart.

If you’re interested in adopting me, fill out an application to get a jump start on the process! We don’t offer holds on shelter pets, so c’mon in to meet and greet to decide if you’ve met your match. Applications for pets in foster care, at Ojo Santa Fe, or offsite in other programs will be reviewed by staff before appointments are scheduled.

More Questions?

  • How much does it cost to adopt a pet?

Puppies and kittens range from $10 to $50. Adults over 6 months are usually free. Adoption fees will be higher for certain breeds and in some locations. For example, Ojo Santa Fe puppies are typically $150.

  • How do my adoption fees help the shelter?

Adoption fees help with medical care, food, and shelter for all animals, not just the youngest or cutest. Most of that expense is paid by our fundraising efforts.

  • How can I prepare my home for adoption?

It depends on your floof’s age and whether they’re a dog or cat. Check out our tips for preparing your home for your new pet. We provide you with a “starter kit” of a collar, pet food and treats.

Also learn about the 3-3-3 rule. It takes a new pet 3 days to calm down, 3 weeks to adapt to your family, and 3 months to bond and build trust. Don’t worry. We’ll have more details and other tips in your adoption package.

  • How do I become a foster parent?

It’s simple. Start by filling out a foster application and our team will contact you. Fostering can be as easy as having a litter of young ones in a spare bathroom before they go to an adoption event. Or, maybe you’d like an adult to spend time with your family, just to see how that pet transforms with a little love and attention. We promise it’ll be rewarding.
